Wiris Partners with TAO to Elevate Digital Mathematics Assessments

Wiris is excited to announce a new partnership with Open Assessment Technologies (OAT), creators of TAO, the world’s leading open-source digital assessment platform.

Wiris is excited to announce a new partnership with Open Assessment Technologies (OAT), creators of TAO, the world’s leading open-source digital assessment platform. Through this collaboration, MathType by Wiris is natively integrated into TAO, empowering educators and institutions to create, deliver, and score authentic mathematics assessments across all levels of education: from primary school to advanced STEM disciplines.

About TAO and Open Assessment Technologies

TAO, developed by Open Assessment Technologies (OAT), is the world’s leading open-source digital assessment solution. Modular, customizable, and fully interoperable, TAO gives institutions complete control over their digital testing environments. Available in more than 80 languages, TAO has delivered over 100 million assessments worldwide, including key international evaluations such as PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment), a global benchmark that measures students’ knowledge and skills in reading, mathematics, and science.

A New Standard for Digital Math Testing

With MathType integrated into TAO, assessment authors can move beyond traditional multiple-choice formats to design questions that capture real mathematical thinking, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving skills essential for 21st-century learning.

“Mathematics deserves more than multiple-choice questions. By integrating MathType by Wiris, TAO empowers institutions to design and deliver assessments that capture how students process and approach problem solving, not just what answer they select,” says Miguel Prieto, VP of Corporate Strategy at Open Assessment Technologies. “This partnership advances our mission to provide open, interoperable, and accessible assessment solutions at scale.”

“Wiris is proud to help build the critical thinking of every student using TAO’s platform by allowing for open-ended math questions, as well as making the teacher’s day-to-day easier. Math isn’t just about memorizing; it’s about developing a unique way of thinking.” adds Sara Fernandes, CSO at Wiris. “This partnership with TAO reinforces Wiris’ mission to help every STEM student and professional make their work more meaningful.”

Creating Smarter, More Accessible Assessments

Within TAO’s authoring environment, MathType’s intuitive WYSIWYG editor allows test creators to seamlessly write complex formulas, from fractions and integrals to equations and geometric expressions. Supporting both MathML and LaTeX, MathType ensures precision, consistency, and accessibility across devices and platforms.

This integration is fully aligned with TAO’s open QTI standards, making assessments interoperable and future-ready. MathML also enables screen readers and assistive technologies to work smoothly, ensuring inclusion and accessibility for every student.

Together, these features create a powerful, scalable, and accessible assessment ecosystem that supports authentic STEM evaluation.

A Partnership that Benefits Educators and Students Worldwide

By combining TAO’s open and modular assessment technology with Wiris’ advanced math authoring tools, ministries of education, universities, and schools can measure reasoning and problem-solving skills in a more meaningful way. Institutions adopting TAO with MathType will gain the ability to assess mathematical understanding — not just correct answers.

The TAO + MathType integration has been available to TAO users since November 3, 2025. Interested users can reach out to their TAO Account Manager to learn more.
